The startup WattAnyWhere, based at the Energypolis Campus in Sion, is developing an electricity generator powered by renewable ethanol. The company reached a decisive milestone in 2025 with a full-scale trial in a gas station. Following the excellent results of this proof of concept, the start-up is now exploring new markets, especially in the military sector.
WattAnyWhere is fully involved in the energy transition. “We are developing an ethanol-powered electricity generator, based on a highly energy-dense fuel that can be produced locally”, says Alexandre Laybros, co-founder of the start-up. The aim is clear: moving away from fossil fuels to generate electricity autonomously and transition towards 100% renewable fuels. The technology is based on an electrochemical process with a fuel cell, which offers an interesting output, twice as efficient as a diesel engine.
A convincing test by Shell
2025 has been marked by a concrete demonstration of WattAnyWhere’s capabilities. “We made a successful full-scale demonstration at a Shell service station in France, a relevant proof of concept at all levels”, rejoices Alexandre Laybros.
The WattAnyWhere generator, which takes the form of a small container, enabled the successful power supply of the trial gas station. However, the full-scale experience also validated several key aspects, from the transportation from Sion to France, to the delivery of ethanol from a local producer. “We could verify the possibility to operate in a local supply chain.”
The speed of deployment is a main advantage. “The system has been delivered and started up in a single day”, underlines Alexandre Laybros. This ease in deployment allows us to quickly meet energy needs. “It is a temporary set-up that can last because the electricity grid situation is critical in some regions.”
The challenge of fundraising in cleantech and the challenge of energy
WattAnyWhere is actively looking for investors to finance its final industrialisation and commercialisation phase. The situation turns out to be particularly complex in cleantech sectors. The geopolitical context also complicates matters. “Geopolitical tensions are huge. Investors are holding onto cash to save or help the start-ups they have in their portfolio first.”
In the face of these difficulties, WattAnyWhere is still exploring new opportunities. “Right now, we are studying the deployment of our solution for the military sector”, reveals the cofounder. The solution “made in Valais” is very interesting. The electrochemical nature of the process offers a decisive advantage, since it is quiet. “It is a crucial point for the army force, just like reducing fossil energy dependency.” To be continued.
