MobyFly goes through a Series A financing to accelerate the marketing of its “flying” decarbonised boats

MobyFly, a young groundbreaking start-up specialised in the maritime and fluvial transportation, enters a decisive step in its development: the industrialisation of its revolutionary “flying” boat. Based on foils technology and inspired by the America’s Cup boats, the company aims at decarbonising the maritime transportation, while offering a smooth, silent sailing experience. Following the success of prototype tests in 2022, Mobyfly is preparing to meet growing demand, especially thanks to the support of the Ark Foundation’s start-up incubator.

By exploiting foils, a technology first developed in the early 20th Century and later perfected for racing boats, MobyFly redefines the maritime transportation. “Our DNA rests on two pillars: public transportation and extreme sailing”, explains Sue Putallaz, CEO of MobyFly. Designed for distances between 0 and 100 kilometres, these “flying” boats follow the trajectory of “fast ferries”. By reducing water resistance, this technology enables up top 90% energy savings while eliminating noise and waves. “With our solution, sickness bags are a distant memory!”, jokes Sue Putallaz.

Since December 2022, MobyFly’s prototype has been successfully tested in le Bouveret (CH), but also in the ocean and on the Douro River in Portugal, which confirms the potential of its technology. These tests pave the way for industrialisation, a mandatory step to satisfy growing demands.

A decisive step to meet market demands

To achieve its ambitions, MobyFly must overcome different strategic challenges. The first one is to reunite the necessary resources to the acceleration of its production, especially via an ongoing financing. “This step is crucial to industrialise our solution and meet the demand”, highlights Sue Putallaz.

Another challenge is the management of the company’s growth. “We must address the financial, human and organisational challenges that come along the rapid growth of our activity”, she adds. Today, a team of around 20 people, made of internal and external partners, works on the project. Finally, MobyFly must be prepared to deliver its boats to an ever-growing customer base. “Clients are starting to rush, and we must be ready to satisfy them”, adds the CEO.

A technological revolution in service of the environment

By developing a decarbonised maritime transportation solution, MobyFly aligns with a strong environmental strategy. “Water transport is comparable to air travel in terms of environmental impact, yet naval technology is more prepared to successfully make the transition. That is precisely what we aim to do”, concludes Sue Putallaz.
